Maling Akala by Pablo Biglang-awa
Highlighting this month’s schedule is a series of Friday screenings of
films made by the alumni members of the UP Artists Circle.
The screenings include Mark Meily’s Crying Ladies (113 mins) on 6 Feb,
Pablo Biglang-awa’s Maling Akala (80 mins) on 13 Feb, Mark Gary’s
Hubad (98 mins) on 20 Feb and on 27 Feb, Poklong Anading’s Diamond
Buildings (10 mins.) and Dindo Martinez’ All Gaps (Running Time: 20
mins).
One of the oldest artists organizations in UP, the UP Artists
Circle continues to have their presence felt in the creative community
may it be in the visual arts, advertising or films. This is the first
time its members who are in films have come together to present their
work in one single project.
Meily who recently won the best director award in the MIFF for his film Baler has also many awards for Crying Ladies here and abroad. Biglang-awa, also known as a visual artist having been exhibited in major Metro Manila art galleries has won international awards for an earlier film Inang Yaya which he co-directed with Veronica Velasco.
Maling Akala, a more recent film and another collaboration with Velasco was a finalist in the Cinema One Originals Awards last year. Marc Gary, an American who has worked as a photographer during the Vietnam war and who lived in the Philippines in the last three decades co-directs Hubad with dance-artist Denisa Reyes.
Anading who coveted the last Ateneo Art
Awards is a multi-media artist who dabbles in painting, photography,
installations, video art and film. His short film Diamond Buildings is
as experimental as his installations. Martinez is also a painter and
will present All Gaps a selection of one-minute ads which he shot
through the years as an in-demand cinematographer. Many of these ads have become household images known to the Filipino television
audience.
The Friday screenings start at 4:30PM. Q&A sessions with the filmmakers follow after screenings. Proceeds of the project will go to the UP Artists Circle Fraternity and Sorority and their advocacies.
